Proper Mass of Saint Teresa of the Andes

July 13 - SAINT TERESA OF JESUS OF THE ANDES, virgin

Juanita Fernández Solar was born in 1900. At the age of 16 she reads Story of a Soul of Thérèse of Lisieux and gets initiated in the doctrine of St. Teresa of Avila about silent prayer. She feels attracted to Elizabeth of the Trinity's writings. Juanita feels the call to a life of adoration and praise of God. On May 7, 1919, she enters the Carmel of Los Andes (Chile) and receives the name of Teresa of Jesus. She dies from typhus on April 12, 1920. In the midst of her trials, the conviction grew in her that "God is infinite joy".

OPENING ANTIPHON

Let us rejoice and shout for joy, because the Lord of all things has favored this holy and glorious virgin with his love.

OPENING PRAYER

God of mercy, joy of the saints, you set the youthful heart of Saint Teresa ablaze with the fire of virginal love for Christ and for his Church; and even in suffering you made her a cheerful witness to charity. Through her intercession, fill us with the delights of your Spirit, so that we may proclaim by word and deed the joyful message of your love to the world.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ...

FIRST READING

A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Philippians (4:4-9)

Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus..

RESPONSORIAL PSALM (Ps 34:2-11)

R/ Taste and see how good the Lord is.

I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise shall be ever in my mouth.
Let my soul glory in the Lord;
the lowly will hear me and be glad. R/

Glorify the Lord with me,
let us together extol his name.
I sought the Lord and he answered me
and delivered me from all my fears. R/

Look to him that you may be radiant with joy,
And your faces may not blush with shame.
When the afflicted man called out, the Lord heard,
and from all his distress he saved him. R/

The angel of the Lord encamps
around those who fear him, and delivers them.
Taste and see how good the Lord is;
happy the man who takes refuge in him. R/

Fear the Lord, you his holy ones,
for naught is lacking to tose who fear him.
The great grow poor and hungry;
but those who seek the Lord want for no good thing. R/

GOSPEL

Alleluia. Alleluia.

I have told you this, says the Lord,
so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete (Jn 15:11)

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John (15:5, 8-17)

Jesus said to his disciples: "I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you. By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love.
I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has a greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I wo chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another."

PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS

Lord, may the gifts we bring you help us to follow the example of Saint Teresa. Cleanse us from our earthly way of life, and teach us to live the new life of your kingdom.

Grant this through Christ our Lord.

COMMUNION ANTIPHON (Mt 25:4, 6)

The five sensible virgins took flasks of oil as well as their lamps. At midnight a cry was heard: the bridegroom is here; let us go out to meet Christ the Lord.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Lord, may our reeption of the body and blood of your Son keep us from harmful things. Help us by the example of Saint Teresa to grow in your love on earth that we may rejoice for ever in heaven.

Grant this through Christ our Lord.
